As part of a series of blog posts on having more success in life, I’m sharing with you some of my favorite self-improvement tips from the top personal success speakers in the world.

Currently, we’re looking at the self-improvement tips found in Brian Tracy’s book “21 Success Secrets of Self-Made Millionaires”.

Tracy’s book is based upon the 21 secrets of success that he discovered were used by all self-made millionaires to achieve their financial independence …and his belief that it is possible for us to learn these secrets through practice and repetition.

In my last post, we learned that developing a workaholic mentality will empower you to put in the time, effort, and work NOW to get your business to the level where it will take care of you in the future.

“I will do today what others won’t …so I can live the rest of my life like others can’t.”

The next secret was to dedicate yourself to lifelong learning using the 3 keys of daily reading, listening to audio training programs, and taking every course and seminar you can find that will create the results leading to you having more success in life.

Today, we will be learning about the next two success secrets …starting with

Brian Tracy’s Success Secret # 8 of Self-Made Millionaires

The eighth success secret of self-made millionaires is Pay Yourself First.

It’s easy to get sidetracked into thinking that being a Millionaire is all about fancy cars and big houses.

Because that’s what you see on TV.

Truth is… most Millionaires are NOTHING like what you see on TV.

There’s nothing wrong with having a big fancy house or a luxury car …but, for MOST people with a Million Dollar Net Worth, all that came much later.

Wealthy people pay themselves FIRST

…before buying all their “toys”.

Financial Independence is their goal

…not having a lot of “status symbols”.

There are plenty of people making 6 figures a year who are still broke because they spend more than they make.

And …if you can’t live within your means on $50,000 a year …you’re not going to do it making $100,000 either.

Not until you’ve developed the HABIT of paying yourself first.

You need to save and invest 10% of your income throughout your working life.

Take 10% of your income off the top of your paycheck each time you receive it and put it away into a special account for financial accumulation.

What Tracy discovered was that anyone, even someone with an average income, can become a millionaire over the course of time

…if they start early enough and save long enough.

He also found that developing the lifelong habit of saving and investing your money is not easy.

It requires tremendous determination and willpower.

You have to set it as a goal, write it down, make a plan, and work on it all the time.

But once it locks in and becomes automatic, your financial success is assured.

If you’re not able to save 10% right now, then start your plan today by saving 1% of your income.

Put it away at the beginning of each month, even before you begin paying your bills.

Live on the other 99% of your income.

As you become comfortable living on the 99%, raise your savings level to 2% of your income …then 3% …4% …and so on.

Within a year, you’ll find yourself saving 10% (maybe even 15% or 20%) of your income and living comfortably on the balance.

You will become more careful about your expenditures …your debts will begin to be paid off …and your savings account will start to grow.

Within a year or two, your entire financial life will be under your control and you’ll be on your way to becoming a self-made millionaire.

This process has worked for everyone who has ever tried it.

Self-improvement tip:  Develop the habit of paying yourself first.  Putting yourself on a wealth accumulation plan, even if it’s a small amount at first, is the most powerful action you can take towards becoming truly financially free and enjoying a successful life.

Brian Tracy’s Success Secret # 9 of Self-Made Millionaires

The ninth success secret of self-made millionaires is to Learn Every Detail of Your Business.

The marketplace only pays excellent rewards for excellent performance.

It pays average rewards for average performance

…and below average rewards, failure, and frustration for below average performance.

Your “job” is to become an expert in your chosen field by learning every single detail about how to do it better.

An easy job …yet most will never do it.

This success secret goes hand in hand with the “Lifelong Learning Secret” that we covered in my last post.

There is no special skill or talent required.

Just immerse yourself in what you’re doing and commit to becoming an expert.

Read and study the latest books.

Attend the courses and seminars given by the experts.

Join your industry or trade associations …attend every meeting …and get involved with the other top people in your line of work.

The Law of Integrative Complexity states that the individual who can integrate and use the greatest amount of information in any field soon rises to the top of that field.

If you are in sales or marketing, become an aggressive, lifelong student of the selling process.

The top 20% of salespeople earn, on average, 16 times the amount of the bottom 80% of salespeople.

The top 10% of salespeople earn even more.

Remember your goal of being in the top 10% from our previous lesson?

If you are starting and building your own business, study entrepreneurial tactics and strategies …and apply new ideas every single day. 

Think what would happen if you took 1 hour a day and committed it to learning and studying marketing, copywriting, and anything else related to your business.

Just one hour a day …would turn into 365 hours a year from now.

Where would your business be after putting 365 hours of “marketing how-to” into your brain? 

How much success would you be enjoying?

NOW …what would happen if you took 2 hours a day …3 hours a day …to learn the details of your business!

If you think you don’t have the time to do this …then break it up into segments.

Spending 15 minutes …four times a day …will give you that CRUCIAL hour of learning.

ANYONE can do this.

Successful entrepreneurs know everything about their business

…even things they don’t do themselves and pay others to do it.

If you’ve been in a business for a year or more, there’s NO EXCUSE for not knowing pretty much every detail of the business …unless you haven’t taken the time to do it. 

As Jim Rohn used to say…

“It’s easy to do things that are important to your success, but it’s easier not to.”

Discipline is the key. 

Most people choose the “easier” path …but if you want to be great, choose to be disciplined and

Do the things that are important to your success.

Remember that, when you think the thoughts and do the things that self-made millionaires do, you will begin to get the same results and benefits they do …including great success in life.

Self-improvement tip:  Set a goal for yourself to become the very best in your business or profession.  One small detail, insight, or idea can be the turning point in your career.  Never stop looking for it.
